Dextromethorphan hydrobromide is a widely used over the counter (OTC) antitussive (cough suppressant) medication that temporarily relieves dry, non-productive coughs caused by colds or minor throat irritation. It works by reducing activity in the brain's cough center and is typically available as liquids, tablets, or lozenges, often as 15 mg or 30 mg strengths.

TESTS
Solution S: Dissolve 1.0 g in ethanol (96 per cent) and dilute to 20 mL with the same solvent.
Appearance of solution: Solution S is clear and colourless.
Acidity or alkalinity: Dissolve 0.4 g in carbon dioxide-free water with gentle heating, cool and dilute to 20 mL with the same solvent. Add 0.1 mL of methyl red solution and 0.2 mL of 0.01 M sodium hydroxide. The solution is yellow. Not more than 0.4 mL of 0.01 M hydrochloric acid is required to change the colour of the indicator to red.
Specific optical rotation: + 28 to + 30 (anhydrous substance). Dissolve 0.200 g in 0.1 M hydrochloric acid and dilute to 10.0 mL with the same acid.
Related substances: To pass the test by Liquid chromatography.
N,N-Dimethylaniline: Maximum 10 ppm.
Water: 4.0 per cent to 5.5 per cent, determined on 0.200 g.
Sulfated ash: Maximum 0.1 per cent, determined on 1.0 g.
Storage: Protected from light.
