Deoxycholic acid is a bile acid that emulsifies dietary fats in the intestine and, when injected subcutaneously, breaks down fat cells. It is FDA-approved to treat moderate-to-severe submental fat (double chin).

Melting Point: 172C to 175C Chenodeoxycholic acid. Also reported is 202C Ursodeoxycholic Acid. literature.
Solubility: Very slightly soluble in water. Freely soluble in alcohol. Soluble in acetone.

DEFINITION
Desoxycholic Acid contains NLT 98.0% and NMT 102.0% of desoxycholic acid (C24H40O4), calculated on the dried basis.
IDENTIFICATION
Add 2 drops of benzaldehyde and 3 drops of 75% sulfuric acid to about 10 mg of Desoxycholic Acid, heat at 50° for 5 min, and then add 10 mL of glacial acetic acid. Acceptance criteria: A green color appears (cholic acid produces a brown color).
Residue on Ignition: NMT 0.2%, using 1.0 g.
Limit of Lead: To pass the test. --- Acceptance criteria: NMT 4 µg/g.
Optical Rotation, Specific Rotation: Sample solution: 1% (w/v) solution in ethanol. Acceptance criteria: NLT +55°
Melting Range or Temperature: 172° –175°
Loss on Drying: Dry at 140° under vacuum of NMT 5 mm of mercury for 4 h. Acceptance criteria: NMT 1%

DEFINITION
Chenodeoxycholic acid contains not less than 99.0 per cent and not more than the equivalent of 101.0 per cent of 3α,7α-dihydroxy-5β-cholan-24-oic acid, calculated with reference to the dried substance.
CHARACTERS
A white or almost white powder, very slightly soluble in water, freely soluble in alcohol, soluble in acetone, slightly soluble in methylene chloride.

C. Dissolve about 10 mg in 1 mL of sulfuric acid. Add 0.1 mL of formaldehyde solution and allow to stand for 5 min. Add 5 mL of water. The suspension obtained is greenish-blue.
TESTS
Specific optical rotation: Dissolve 0.500 g in methanol and dilute to 25.0 mL with the same solvent. The specific optical rotation is + 11.0 to + 13.0, calculated with reference to the dried substance.
Related substances: To pass the test by thin-layer chromatography.
Loss on drying: Not more than 1.5 per cent, determined on 1.000 g by drying in an oven at 105C.
Sulfated ash: Not more than 0.1 per cent, determined on 1.0 g.

Solubility: Practically insoluble in water, freely soluble in ethanol (96 per cent), slightly soluble in acetone, practically insoluble in methylene chloride.

Loss on drying: Maximum 1.0 per cent, determined on 1.000 g by drying in an oven at 105C.
Sulfated ash: Maximum 0.1 per cent, determined on 1.0 g.
